the race for romney. it's hard to imagine -- it's hard to imagine obama going in there and doing a terrible job. it's possible. sort of equally impossible to imagine romney doing such an outstanding job, so different than we've ever expected that would also make a difference and yet, that's what he really has to go for. >> you say that except in 2004, i keep talking about 2004 today, you know, george bush had about a six-point lead nationally going into the first debate. john kerry did not do anything magical in that first debate but managed to perform better than people expected him to and better than george w. bush. he picked up about four points nationally after the first debate. it's not unconceivable mitt romney could do that. the key with debates does president obama perform poorly or mitt romney well. the key with all debates what's the moment. is there a big moment that crashes through and changes people's perceptions about the dynamic in a big way. governor romney will not only have to perform well in general because president obama's likely to perform well in general but he has to

. that shows the hurdles that mitt romney has, even though the race is close. >> we talked about early voting and we know as i mentioned ohio and several other states have to correct the math if i'm wrong here, hard to keep up at this point, i think it's around 30, so many states with early voting at this point. this is before the big debate and millions of eyes will be on the debate, whether in its long form or clicking on to clips that will hit the internet within minutes of it coming out of the candidate's mouth? >> that early voting is why this debate is probably more important for mitt romney than the ones we're going to see in the next couple weeks. tamron, the numbers are, there are 32 states as of today that are voting in some form or fashion, absentee or early in person voting. some tomorrcome tomorrow when y ohio and other states, we'll be at 35 states across the country. more than half the country will be voting. >> it's interesting, mark, i love your analysis and don't want to put you on the spot, but at this point 37 days until election day what has struck you most about the swin

in that race bob casey ahead of his republican challenger by eight points. as mitt romney's, shall we say, second place standing starts to look like more and more of a permanent residence as it seems like a long shot for winning the presidency, the down ticket effect of that is starting to become a bigger part of the conversation. you saw a manifestation of that last week on this show when nancy pelosi came on this show and said, essentially, democrats can win back the house. nancy pelosi said not only is she confident that democrats can get the 25 seats they need to take e back control of the house, which is a huge number, she says she, quote, liked to have 35 seats, which would be a lot. and while it is news worthy that the democrats think they can take back the house, it should be said that a number of other observers looking at the same prospect are call k the idea that the democrats could take back the house pretty much impossible. politico publishing a piece on it. one of the consequences of republicans winning so many seats in the state legislatures in the big election of 2010 is t
argument emerged about the polling that says that mitt romney is losing the race and losing badly in the new polls, yes, but the new argument on the right is that the polls are all wrong. mathematically. even the fox news poll. they are all unfairly skewed to make it look like obama is winning when, in fact, that's not the case. the new argument on the right is that if you reconfigure all of the mainstream polls to unskew if i them to make them be less liberal, they don't look like this anymore with 20 straight polls for obama. instead they look like this. hey, yeah, that's way better. mitt romney is actually winning all of the recent polls that you thought president obama was winning. the guy who did this it neat trick, the unskewing of the polling so mitt romney wins in every one instead of losing in every one, that guy explained his methodology to the folks at buzz feed saying he created this new romney-always-wins polling site, quote, after reading a "washington post" poll that just didn't look right noting that the polling had sampled more democrats than republicans. sampling

who live in states that don't have any contested races this year, when mr. romney is in massachusetts, it's not a swing state but massachusetts does have a really contested senate race. republican senator scott brown is trying desperately, very desperately, to fend off a challenge from democratic candidate elizabeth warren. i use the word desperate on purpose. after releasing one ad attacking elizabeth warren on the basis of race, after his staffers were caught childishly mocking native americans with the whole tom hawk chop and war whoop thing, after the cherokee nation asked scott brown to apologize for that and he refused to do so, after all that scott brown has put out a second ad just today again attacking elizabeth warren on the basis of race. the scott brown campaign must have some amazing internal poll numbers showing that a race-based campaign is working wonders for him. because i don't know how else you explain this. it's not a whisper campaign, anonymous flyers on windshields in church parking lots like we used to expect for this sort of thing. this comes straight from the
